Dictionary

Key Marine Biology Terms

Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.

  • Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is the production of light by a living organism through a chemical reaction, as seen in fireflies and in many deep-sea animals.

  • Coral bleaching

Coral bleaching is the paling of stressed corals as they lose the tiny symbiotic algae inside their tissue, most often because the water is too warm.

  • Coral reef

A coral reef is an underwater ridge built over centuries from the limestone skeletons of colonial coral animals, home to some of Earth's richest sea life.

  • Estuary

An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water where river water meets and mixes with seawater, so that the water there is brackish.

  • Ocean acidification

Ocean acidification is the ongoing fall in the pH of seawater, driven mainly by the uptake of carbon dioxide that human activities release into the air.

  • Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are microscopic photosynthetic organisms that drift near the surface of oceans and lakes and form the base of most aquatic food webs.
