6Quizzes
Developmental Biology
Dive into the fascinating process of how a single cell transforms into a complete organism. These quizzes cover embryonic development, pattern formation, morphogenesis, stem cells, and key signaling pathways.
Fetal Development
Prenatal development from zygote to birth: trimesters, placenta, umbilical cord, organ formation, and teratogens.
Limb Development
The signaling pathways and cellular processes that form a vertebrate limb.
Gametogenesis & Fertilization
The fundamental processes of creating gametes and the fusion that starts a new life.
Morphogenesis & Pattern Formation
How do cells know where to go? A quiz on the mechanisms that shape an organism.
The Role of Hox Genes
Test your knowledge of the "master" genes that control the body plan of an animal.
Introduction to Gastrulation
Explore the formation of the three primary germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
Dictionary
Key Developmental Biology Terms
Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.
- Blastocyst
A blastocyst is the hollow ball of cells that a mammalian embryo forms about five days after fertilization, shortly before it implants in the uterus.
- Embryo
An embryo is an organism in its earliest stage of development; in humans, from about the second week after fertilization to the end of the eighth week.
- Fertilization
Fertilization is the fusion of a sperm and an egg, the male and female gametes, into a single diploid cell, the zygote, that can develop into a new organism.
- Gamete
A gamete is a haploid reproductive cell, such as a sperm or an egg, that fuses with a gamete of the opposite type at fertilization to form a zygote.
- Gastrulation
Gastrulation is the stage of early embryonic development in which cells move and fold to turn a simple ball or disc of cells into three germ layers.
- Germ layer
A germ layer is one of the primary cell layers of an early animal embryo (ectoderm, mesoderm or endoderm) from which all its tissues and organs develop.
