Dictionary

Key Stem Cell Biology Terms

Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.

  • Cell differentiation

Cell differentiation is the process by which an unspecialized cell becomes a specialized type, such as a neuron or muscle cell, by switching on a set of genes.

  • Embryonic stem cell

An embryonic stem cell is a pluripotent stem cell taken from the inner cell mass of an early embryo, the blastocyst, and able to form every type of body cell.

  • Hematopoietic stem cell

A hematopoietic stem cell is a multipotent stem cell, found mainly in the bone marrow, that renews itself and gives rise to every type of blood cell.

  • Induced pluripotent stem cell

An induced pluripotent stem cell is an adult body cell, such as a skin cell, reprogrammed in the lab to be pluripotent, much like an embryonic stem cell.

  • Mesenchymal stem cell

A mesenchymal stem cell is a multipotent adult cell, found in bone marrow, fat and other tissues, that can turn into bone, cartilage or fat cells.

  • Multipotency

Multipotency is the ability of a stem cell to develop into several kinds of specialized cell, but only those of one tissue or a closely related family.
