Dictionary
Key Human Anatomy Terms
Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.
- Adrenal gland
An adrenal gland is one of two small endocrine glands atop the kidneys, with a cortex that makes steroid hormones and a medulla that makes epinephrine.
- Aorta
The aorta is the body's largest artery, carrying oxygenated blood out of the heart's left ventricle to the arteries that supply every organ.
- Bone
Bone is the hard, mineralized connective tissue that makes up most of the adult skeleton, and the name for each skeletal organ built from it.
- Brachial plexus
The brachial plexus is the network of nerves formed from spinal nerves C5 to T1 that supplies movement and feeling to the shoulder, arm and hand.
- Cartilage
Cartilage is a tough, flexible connective tissue without blood vessels that cushions joints and shapes the nose, ears and airways.
- Diaphragm
In anatomy, the diaphragm is the dome-shaped sheet of muscle and tendon dividing the chest from the abdomen, and the main muscle of breathing.
Diagrams

- Human Heart diagram
The parts of the human heart and what each does: the four chambers, the four valves, the septum, the wall and the great vessels that carry blood in and out.
- Human Eye diagram
The parts of the human eye and what each does: the cornea, iris, lens and ciliary body, the three coats, the retina with its fovea, and the optic nerve.
