Cellular Adaptations
Test your knowledge of hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy, and metaplasia.
Dictionary
Key Pathology Terms
Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.
- Amyloidosis
Amyloidosis is a group of diseases in which misfolded proteins clump into insoluble amyloid fibrils that build up in organs and disrupt how they work.
- Anemia
Anemia is a condition in which the blood has fewer healthy red blood cells or less hemoglobin than normal, so less oxygen reaches the tissues.
- Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a disease in which fatty plaque builds up inside artery walls, stiffening and narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow.
- Atrophy
Atrophy is the shrinking of a cell, tissue or organ that had reached normal size, usually as cells lose substance in response to reduced demand or support.
- Dysplasia
Dysplasia is the presence of abnormal-looking, disordered cells within a tissue, a precancerous change that may regress or progress to cancer.
- Edema
Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid collecting in the spaces between the cells of a tissue, most often seen in the feet, ankles and legs.
Diagrams

Interactive diagrams to step through before a quiz, every part linked to its definition.
- Coagulation Cascade diagram
How the coagulation cascade turns fibrinogen into fibrin: the intrinsic, extrinsic and common pathways, the PT and aPTT, and the drugs that act on it.
Career
Where Pathology Leads
Careers that use it: what each job is, how people get in and what it pays.
- Clinical Scientist
Uses specialist science in healthcare: running and interpreting complex tests and developing new methods that guide diagnosis and treatment.
- Pathologist
Diagnoses disease from tissue, cells, blood and other samples, producing the findings that guide the treatment other doctors give.
- Biomedical Scientist
Tests blood, tissue and other samples in hospital labs to help doctors diagnose disease, choose treatment and check that it is working.
- Dietitian
Assesses what people eat and turns the science of nutrition into practical diet plans that treat illness and support recovery.
- General Practitioner
Looks after patients of every age in the community: works out what is wrong, prescribes treatment and sends people on to hospital specialists when needed.
- Histotechnologist
Turns tissue from biopsies and operations into thin, stained slides that pathologists examine under the microscope to make a diagnosis.
