Key Medicine Terms
Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.
- Asthma
Asthma is a long-term lung disease in which the airways become inflamed and narrowed, causing wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness.
- Chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease is a gradual, lasting loss of kidney function in which the kidneys filter blood less well, so wastes and fluid build up in the body.
- COPD
COPD is a long-term lung disease, usually caused by smoke or polluted air, in which damaged airways and air sacs limit the flow of air out of the lungs.
- Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease in which blood glucose stays too high because the body makes too little insulin or cannot use it well.
- Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a long-term brain disorder in which a person has repeated unprovoked seizures caused by bursts of abnormal electrical activity in neurons.
- Heart failure

- Human Heart diagram
The parts of the human heart and what each does: the four chambers, the four valves, the septum, the wall and the great vessels that carry blood in and out.
- Blood Flow Through the Heart diagram
The path blood takes through the heart, in order: from the venae cavae through the right side to the lungs, then back through the left side to the aorta.
- Nephron diagram
How a nephron makes urine: filtration at the glomerulus, reabsorption along the tubule, the loop of Henle, and the hormones that set the final volume.
- Cardiac Conduction System diagram
