Dictionary

Key Immunology Terms

Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.

  • Adaptive immunity

Adaptive immunity is the branch of the immune system that learns to recognize specific antigens and remembers them, so it responds faster next time.

  • Allergy

An allergy is an immune overreaction to a normally harmless substance, such as pollen or peanuts, driven mainly by IgE antibodies and mast cells.

  • Antibody

An antibody is a Y-shaped protein made by B cells and plasma cells that binds tightly to one specific antigen and helps the body destroy it.

  • Antigen

An antigen is any molecule the immune system can recognize as a target, especially one that prompts antibodies or T cells to respond against it.

  • Autoimmunity

Autoimmunity is an immune response wrongly directed at the body's own healthy cells and tissues, and it is the cause of autoimmune diseases.

  • B cell

A B cell is a lymphocyte, a kind of white blood cell, that produces antibodies and forms a key part of the adaptive immune system.

  • Antibody in 3D

A Y-shaped protein of the immune system: two arms that bind a target, and a stem that calls in the cells and proteins that destroy it.

Career

Where Immunology Leads

Careers that use it: what each job is, how people get in and what it pays.

  • Biomedical Scientist

Tests blood, tissue and other samples in hospital labs to help doctors diagnose disease, choose treatment and check that it is working.

  • Microbiologist

Studies bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes to diagnose infections, keep medicines and food safe, and put microbes to useful work.

  • Biomedical Research Scientist

Investigates the causes of human disease and looks for better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent it, through lab and clinical research.

  • Epidemiologist

Studies how disease spreads and who it affects, finding causes and risk factors so health services can prevent and control illness.

  • Health Promotion Specialist

Designs and runs programmes that help people and communities stay healthy, from stop-smoking schemes to sexual and mental health campaigns.

  • Medical and Science Writer

Writes clear, accurate material about science and medicine, from patient leaflets and news stories to clinical trial documents.
