Bioinformatics Terms
Bioinformatics uses computers to store, search and compare biological data, above all DNA, RNA and protein sequences. These terms cover databases such as GenBank, sequence formats and alignment algorithms, BLAST searches, genome annotation and systems biology.

B
- BioinformaticsBioinformaticsBioinformatics is the science of using computers to gather, store, analyze and share biological data, especially DNA, RNA and protein sequences.
- BLASTBioinformaticsBLAST is a widely used program that searches databases for DNA or protein sequences similar to a query and ranks the matches by statistical significance.

G
- GenBankBioinformaticsGenBank is the public database of DNA and RNA sequences run by the US National Center for Biotechnology Information, with annotated records free to use.
- GenomeGenomicsA genome is the complete set of DNA in an organism or cell, including all of its genes and the stretches of DNA between them.
- Genome annotationGenomicsGenome annotation is the process of identifying where genes and other features lie in a genome sequence and describing what each of them does.

N
- Needleman–Wunsch algorithmBioinformaticsThe Needleman–Wunsch algorithm is a dynamic programming method that finds the best-scoring global alignment of two sequences along their entire length.
- Next-generation sequencingGenomicsNext-generation sequencing (NGS) is a set of high-throughput methods that read the sequences of millions of short DNA fragments in parallel.

- Sequence alignmentBioinformaticsSequence alignment is a way of lining up two or more DNA, RNA or protein sequences so that matching positions share a column, showing how similar they are.
- Smith–Waterman algorithmBioinformaticsThe Smith–Waterman algorithm is a dynamic programming method that finds the highest-scoring local alignment, the best-matching region, of two sequences.
- Systems biologyBioinformaticsSystems biology studies how genes, proteins, metabolites and cells work together as networks, using big datasets and computer models to explain the whole.
