Proteomics Terms
Proteomics studies the full set of proteins in a cell or organism: which are present, how much of each, and how they change. These terms cover protein structure and folding, the chemical changes made to proteins, and lab methods such as SDS-PAGE, western blotting and mass spectrometry.

- PhosphorylationBiochemistryPhosphorylation is the attachment of a phosphate group to a protein, sugar or other molecule, a key way cells make ATP and switch proteins on or off.
- Post-translational modificationMolecular BiologyA post-translational modification is a chemical change made to a protein after it is built on the ribosome, often altering its activity or location.
- Protein foldingBiochemistryProtein folding is the process by which a newly made chain of amino acids coils and folds into the specific three-dimensional shape it needs to work.
- ProteomeProteomicsA proteome is the complete collection of proteins made by a cell, tissue or organism at a given time, including all their modified forms.
- ProteomicsProteomicsProteomics is the large-scale study of the proteome, the full set of proteins in a cell, tissue or organism, including their amounts, changes and interactions.
