Synthetic Biology Terms
Synthetic biology applies engineering design to living things, building new genetic parts and systems. These terms cover standardized DNA parts such as promoters, ribosome binding sites and BioBricks, genetic circuits and reporter genes, minimal genomes and metabolic engineering.

B
- BioBrickSynthetic BiologyA BioBrick is a standardized piece of DNA, such as a promoter or gene, flanked by fixed sequences so it can be joined to other parts in a repeatable way.
- BioreactorBiotechnologyA bioreactor is a vessel that keeps living cells or enzymes under controlled conditions so they can grow and make a product, such as a drug or vaccine.
G
M
- Metabolic engineeringSynthetic BiologyMetabolic engineering is the redesign of a cell's metabolic pathways with genetic tools so that it makes more of a useful product, or makes a new one.
- Minimal genomeSynthetic BiologyA minimal genome is the smallest set of genes that allows a cell to grow and divide on its own under defined laboratory conditions.
P
R
- Reporter geneMolecular BiologyA reporter gene is a gene whose product is easy to see or measure, joined to DNA of interest so that its activity or location can be tracked.
- Ribosome binding siteMolecular BiologyA ribosome binding site is a short stretch of messenger RNA just before the start codon where a ribosome attaches to begin translating a bacterial gene.
