Key Mycology Terms

Plain definitions, with how to say each word and where it comes from.

  • Fungus

A fungus is a eukaryote, such as a yeast, mold or mushroom, that has chitin in its cell walls and feeds by absorbing nutrients from its surroundings.

  • Hypha

A hypha is one of the long, branching threads that make up the body of most fungi; a tangled mass of hyphae forms a mycelium.

  • Lichen

A lichen is a composite organism formed by a fungus living in close partnership with a photosynthetic alga or cyanobacterium, or sometimes both.

  • Mold

A mold is a fungus that grows as a fuzzy network of branching threads called hyphae, often seen on damp walls and spoiling food.

  • Mushroom

A mushroom is the visible spore-producing fruiting body of certain fungi, usually a stalk and cap that grows from a mycelium hidden in soil or wood.

  • Mycelium

A mycelium is the branching network of thread-like hyphae that forms the main feeding body of a fungus, usually hidden in soil, wood or food.

Career

Where Mycology Leads

Careers that use it: what each job is, how people get in and what it pays.

  • Food Scientist

Applies chemistry, microbiology and engineering to make food safe, nutritious and appealing, and to keep it that way from factory to plate.

  • Microbiologist

Studies bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes to diagnose infections, keep medicines and food safe, and put microbes to useful work.

  • Plant Scientist

Studies how plants grow, fight off disease and respond to soil and climate, and uses that knowledge to improve crops.
